Budget FAQs
Common questions about creating and managing your construction budget.
How do I create my budget?
Go to the Budget page, click "Load Template" to start with standard NAHB categories, then customize amounts based on your project estimates and contractor bids.
What budget categories should I include?
At minimum: site work, foundation, framing, roofing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, insulation, drywall, flooring, cabinets, countertops, fixtures, exterior, landscaping, permits, and contingency.
What is a contingency?
A buffer (typically 10-15% of total budget) for unexpected costs. Owner-builders should budget at least 15% contingency — construction always has surprises.
How do allowances affect my budget?
Allowances are linked to budget line items. When you choose a product selection, OwnerDraw shows the variance (over/under) compared to your original budget amount. It never overwrites your budget.
Can I import a budget from a spreadsheet?
Not yet — this feature is on the roadmap. For now, use the NAHB template as a starting point and customize it for your project.
