Flooring Calculator
Calculate square footage of hardwood, LVP, tile, or carpet with waste factor built in. Works for simple rectangles or L-shaped rooms.
Flooring estimates are area-based: measure the room, add a waste factor, and convert to the unit your supplier sells — usually square feet or cartons. The waste factor matters more for flooring than almost any other trade because every row starts and ends with a cut, and complex patterns multiply offcuts. This calculator handles waste math for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What waste factor should I use for flooring?
Use 10% for rectangular rooms with straight-lay patterns. Diagonal installations need 15%. Herringbone and chevron patterns require 15–20% due to the high number of angled cuts.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Break the room into two rectangles, measure each separately, and add the areas together. This calculator supports an optional second area for exactly this scenario.
Is LVP or hardwood easier to estimate?
Both use the same area-based calculation. The difference is in box sizes — LVP typically comes in boxes covering 20–24 sq ft, while hardwood cartons cover 18–22 sq ft. Check your specific product for carton coverage.
Estimates are for planning purposes only. Verify quantities with your supplier and confirm code requirements with your local building department.
